Although there is constant pressure from paper shippers and end users to reduce damage in the handling chain, it is difficult for stevedores to justify investment in paper roll clamps with microprocessor technology and there is still some scepticism in the ports industry about their real utility and cost-effectiveness.

Computer-controlled clamps are designed to take the guesswork out of paper handling, particularly when having to switch between rolls of different sizes and mass makes it harder for the driver to get it right. Too much pressure leads to out-of-roundness and too little may cause the roll to slip out, causing scuffing or edge damage.
