Kotka storms ahead in container stakes

In-Depth

For the first time ever, this year the Port of Kotka is set to overtake Helsinki to become Finland’s largest lolo container port. Kotka has yet to announce official results, but the port’s leading stevedore, Steveco, estimates, based on its own performance, that it, Finnsteve and Multi Link Terminals, together with roro operations at the Hietanen terminal, will collectively account for more than 500,000 TEU of traffic.

Steveco will handle around 380,000 TEU this year and is experiencing growing demand for stuffing operations for mainly Far East export paper products. These tend to be shipped via Hamburg or Bremerhaven on feeder ships and help balance the inbound Russian transit traffic. Currently around 4800 40ft containers/month are being stuffed at the port, up from around 3400 containers a year ago and it is anticipated the figure will top 10,000 TEU/month in the New Year.
