Hapag-Lloyd signs contract for 24 newbuildings
NewsHapag-Lloyd has contracted Chinese shipyards to build 24 new container ships, with a total capacity of 312,000 TEU, for US$ 4b, to be delivered by 2029.
At least that is the verdict of Hapag-Lloyd’s CEO Rolf Habben Jansen. Hosting a webinar for the media, he said: “Rates are hovering around 2019 levels and this is a real problem for us as costs are 25% to 30% higher today than then. On quite a few trades these rates are unsustainable and, overall, I expect rougher seas to prevail in the next few quarters.”
