Just as 19,200 TEU vessels come on stream, there is already talk that 24,000 TEU ships could be possible. Ultra-large containerships (ULCS) – defined as ships in the 10,000 TEU-plus range – are fast becoming the norm in mainhaul trades. Economy of scale is the dominant factor and slot costs are reduced even further by slow and super slow steaming speeds, ranging between 14 and 19 knots.
