Is Rhine container shipping in dire straits?

As the number of containers moving in Rhine barges continues to increase, so do the concerns of the inland shipping lines that carry them. Caught in a classic cost/price squeeze, their returns are slipping and this is reflected in the slowdown in traffic growth. Following growth of 17.3% in 2004 and 8.5% in 2005, the rate of growth in the first half of 2006 was a modest 4%, despite the absence so far this year of disruption due to low or high water levels.
