APMT starts expansion work at Callao

News

APM Terminals (APMT) has started work on stage 3A of its Multipurpose North Terminal Modernisation programme in the port of Callao, Peru.

In excess of US$95M is being invested by the company in the project which will include:

  •           the construction of a battery of 12 vertical silos for storing clean grain, raising the facility’s capacity from 25,000t to 85,000t
  •          the purchase and installation of two continuous free-flow solid grain unloaders, which will improve unloading productivity.
  •          paving of 2.13-ha of land and gate improvements for the general cargo facility

The investment in the grain segment of the port’s business is extremely important as APMT’s facility handles 54% of the corn and 100% of the barley imported into Peru.

Meanwhile, APMT has announced that on completion of phase 3A and once the container terminal reaches an annual throughput of 1.1M TEU, it will spend US$328M on phase 3B, but with US$500M possible. This would be 50% ahead of its contractual obligation as set out in the concession agreement.

APMT said that Stage 3B “will benefit both general and containerised cargo customers, through the addition of a new 440m fully equipped container berth and dredging works that will facilitate container vessels up to 400m long with draughts of 16m.”

As part of this programme, APMT will purchase four super post-Panamax STS cranes, 12 eRTGs and 33 terminal tractors. The expanded infrastructure and new equipment would increase the terminal’s annual container handling capacity to 2.8M TEU.

Similarly, the terminal’s existing piers one and two will be demolished and rebuilt using more modern designs. The berthing line will be extended to 220m with 7ha of paved area developed.

Commenting on the plans, Lars Vang Christensen, CEO of APM Terminals Callao, said: “We are happy and proud to start the next stages of the modernisation project – a total commitment of US$1,200 million in the most important public port in the country. For more than 12 years, APM Terminals Callao has embraced the challenge of leading the significant transformation and development of the port of Callao, lifting the standard of connectivity between Peru and global trade.”
