Baku agrees MoU with Moroccan ports

News

Azerbaijan’s Baku International Sea Trade Port CJSC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Ports Agency (NPA) in Morocco. The agreement calls for cooperation on many fronts, including port operations, logistics, terminal management and infrastructural developments.

In addition, Baku and the NPA will exchange ideas on management best practices and issues including safety and environmental protection. Both countries have significant port and transport infrastructure projects under development and can learn from each other’s experiences.

Currently, Baku is pressing ahead with its latest expansion plan which will see several new cargo-handling facilities developed and some existing ones modernised. A new facility for handling 2.5 Mtpa of fertilisers is scheduled to open this year with a rail ferry terminal due to be developed to handle regular services to/from the port and Aktau (Kazakhstan) as part of the port’s second phase expansion programme.

The various developments are partly targeted at exploiting growth opportunities on the transport route linking China, the Caucasus and Europe (Middle Corridor), an axis that Baku already plays an important role in.

On completion of its second phase expansion programme, Baku will have the capacity to handle 25Mt and 500,000 TEU a year.
