SIPG to open Haifa Bay Port

News-in-print

Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) has begun handling vessels repositioning empty containers at its new Haifa Bay Port Terminal in Israel, officially known as Haifa Newport Terminal Co Ltd (HNTC), ahead of its official opening later this year.

The new terminal features eight semi-automated and remote-controlled STS cranes and 22 ASCs, all from ZPMC, as well as software supplied by the Chinese company.

In July, the terminal loaded some 4,252 of empty containers on board MSC MARYLENA. The call was handled over eight days, using two of the STS cranes and eight of the ASCs.

At the end of this month, the 14,500 TEU COSCO SHIPPING ALPS is expected to call at HNTC, again to load empty containers for repositioning.

The terminal will host a virtual ceremony for the arrival of the vessel, but it is not expected to enter full commercial operations until 2022.

At the moment, Haifa Bay Port Terminal is the only terminal in Israel that can accommodate a 15,000 TEU vessel. Some 150 km south of Haifa, the new Hadarom Container Terminal at Ashdod, which will be operated by Terminal Investment Limited, is expected to start operations this year and is designed for vessels up to 20,000 TEU.
