New Mumbai terminal on target

News

The PSA Group expects to open the fourth container terminal at Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port at the start of 2018.

The PSA has announced that work on its new Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT) is progressing to schedule. Civil and infrastructure works are underway and PSA has ordered the first batch of 23-row outreach STS cranes, as well as RMGs and RTGs for the yard.
Phase 1 of the terminal is expected to be completed and operational by early 2018, adding 2.4M TEU capacity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port. Upon completion, Phase 1 will feature a quay length of 1,000m with a depth of up to 16.5m, and 12 quay cranes.
On the landside, BMCT will be accessed through a dedicated road and rail corridor, which PSA said is a major strategic advantage. “To avoid congestion to and from the terminal, access to BMCT is facilitated by a dedicated road separate from other terminals. As the only Dedicated
Freight Corridor (DFC) compliant terminal, it is able to handle 1,500-metre long double
stack trains direct to the National Capital Region (NCR) of India. It also contributes as a
gateway outlet to the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor”.
PSA has high hopes for BMCT, and is currently planning Phase 2 of the project, which will double the capacity of the terminal to 4.8M TEU.
