Sydney adds empty storage

News-in-print

DP World Australia’s (DPWA) Sydney terminal has extended its empty container handling capability, by opening a new 17,100 m2 stacking area with 371 20ft ground slots, to push the terminal’s empty box capacity to 4,350 TEU.

Glenn Wayne, acting general manager, operations, said the development will improve empty container logistics. “Shipping lines will have the commercial benefits of direct-to-port dehire,” said Wayne. “Transport companies will have the efficiencies and convenience of de-hire at the port while undertaking another import/export cargo movement. We’ve been able to facilitate the option to backload with the cooperation of Transport for NSW, which will deliver a great outcome for all.”

Initially open five days a week, 6am-10pm, DPWA will be looking to start night time hours once it has transitioned sufficient volume to the new model. “The potential to increase off- peak activity, while reducing truck trips by maximising opportunities for full loads both ways, provides benefits for the terminal, the transport company, and the community,” the  company stated.
