Antwerp gets active abroad

Asyad Ports has opened Oman’s newest container terminal. Located in the port of Duqm, it will support the nearby special economic zone while also offering ocean carriers an alternative transhipment hub to the country’s other main ports, Sohar and Salalah.

Antwerp Port Authority and its consultancy and investment subsidiary Port of Antwerp International have signed a new agreement with Enabel, the Belgian development agency. The aim is to combine forces with a view to driving sustainable development for ports in developing countries, particularly in Africa

Port of Antwerp, through its subsidiary Port of Antwerp International (PAI), will invest US$10M in Porto do Açu, a privately owned port complex in São João da Barra, in the northern part of Rio de Janeiro State in Brazil

A new container terminal being developed at the port of Duqm, Oman, is scheduled to open in early 2020. The new facility will have an initial capacity to handle 200,000 TEU a year, but will have the footprint, including a 2.2 km quay, to handle as many as 3.5M TEU. The speed with which this capacity is phased into operation will depend on demand.

Antwerp and Rotterdam port authorities have been active in international projects and are keen to expand further in this arena.

The Port of Duqm and Oman Rail Company (ORC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will pave the way for the new port to be connected to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) rail network, and for the development of a large rail hub and support centre in the central coastal belt of the country.
