New Stockholm – Rotterdam connection
NewsHutchison Ports Stockholm has announced a new service with a direct connection between Rotterdam and its terminal at Norvik will commence this November.
The port has reported a 4% increase in lo-lo container traffic during the third quarter of this year, although car volumes and general ro-ro volumes fell
The port notes that the lo-lo business increased by 4% to 226,000 containers “despite turmoil in the world economy.”
“As we handle such a large proportion of Swedish foreign trade, we notice fluctuations in the economy very clearly at an early stage,” said the port’s CEO Magnus Kårestedt. “It was somewhat unexpected that container trade held its own as well as it did during the third quarter, bearing in mind the current state of the world economy.” Overall for the first nine months of this year, container traffic is still down by 2%, however.
Rolling cargo throughput fell by 4% during the third quarter to 127,000 units, with cars down to 30,000 units compared to 45,000 during the third quarter of 2011. The downturn can be explained in part by a decrease in the export of Volvo cars.
Continuing a notable trend, during the third quarter the volume of rail transport to/from the port increased by a further 10% year on year. The port’s rail traffic currently replaces around 700 truck movements each day. There are now 26 rail shuttles that offer daily departures. The latest shuttle began operating in September between Gothenburg and Stockholm-Årsta.
On the liquid side, 6.1 Mt of oil, diesel, ethanol, asphalt and other products were handled, up 30% year-on-year and setting a new quarterly record. The upturn can be attributed mainly to a rise in volumes at the refineries, especially diesel.
