The Nigerian Ports Authority has a new managing director, Habibu Abdullahi
Nigeria’s president Goodluck Jonathan has directly intervened in the Nigerian port sector by replacing Omar Suleiman with Habibu Abdullahi as managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). Abdullahi was previously the acting executive director for finance and administration at the organisation.
It is politically important that the leaders of Nigeria’s main parastatals represent both the mainly Muslim north of the country as well as the predominantly Christian south. The selection of Abdullahi ensures that the head of the NPA remains a northern Muslim.
Suleiman’s dismissal was not expected, but no reason has been given for the decision. Three new directors have also been appointed at the NPA: David Omonibeke, who becomes executive director for marine and operations; Mohammmed Sani Saleh, executive director for engineering and technical services; and Olumide Oduntan, who steps into Abdullahi’s former position as executive director for finance and administration. There has also been a big shake up at the top of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
