Antwerp for Ruukki Steel

News

Ruukki, the Finnish steel company, recently chose Antwerp as its European distribution hub

The steel shipper is using Antwerp as discharging port for regular weekly shipments from Finland. The steel is stored and handled in Antwerp, from where it is transported to overseas destinations and the European hinterland.

Ruukki is working with logistics group Thor Shipping & Transport and Antwerp Stevedoring International, the stevedoring division of Wijngaard Natie.

Despite missing out on some recent new traffic flows (eg TKS slabs from Brazil), Antwerp is still Europe’s largest steel handling port and last year the volume of steel it handled rose by 30% to more than 9 Mt.

After a successful test voyage in December, Ruukki has been sending weekly consignments of steel to Antwerp from Raahe in Northern Finland. The various steel products are unloaded and loaded in Wijngaard Natie’s covered All Weather Terminal (AWT) in the Albert dock, where high-value goods can be handled under protection from wind and rain. The AWT can accommodate vessels up to 10,000 dwt.

The terminal is equipped with modern warehouses where the temperature and humidity can be controlled to suit the goods that are stored there. Various other companies in the vicinity for their part specialise in handling, decoiling, cutting, inspecting, labelling, packaging, loading and transporting steel products.
