China Ocean Shipping Group (Cosco) and China Shipping Group (CSG), which have estimated combined revenues of US$40B are to merge. Discussions between the two groups and China’s government have been taking place since August and were agreed by the State Council’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission on 11 December.

The two leading Chinese shipping groups China Ocean Shipping Company (Cosco) and China Shipping Container lines (CSCL) have signed a “strategic cooperation framework agreement.” This “will establish an extensive strategic partnership and a resource sharing mechanism in the field of shipping, terminal operation, logistics services, shipbuilding, ship repair and maintenance and related activities,” the companies said in a joint statement.

China Ocean Shipping Co (Cosco) is in talks to buy a stake in a container terminal in Kaohsiung under development by Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp, reviving earlier discussions between the two companies reported in 2011.
