India’s box volume surges 11%

Container throughput at India’s major ports rose 11% to 5.59M TEU in the April-December period, up from 5.04M TEU a year earlier, the Indian Ports Association (IPA) said.

Throughput at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP), the country’s largest box port, rose 7% to 3.2M TEU, while Chennai in the south east port 1.12m TEUs, up 26% on the prior year period.

Kolkata’s throughput rose to 387,000 TEU from 375,000 TEU, Tuticorin moved 341,000 TEU, up from 320,000 TEU, while volumes at Cochin were flat at 219,000 TEU.

The IPA said total tonnage handled at the 13 state-owned ports from April to December was up 1.1% to 416.6 mt. Kandla had the4 highest throughput at 61.4 mt, followed by Visakhatpatnam at 49.8 mt.

Based on current growth trends, major ports are unlikely to reach the overall throughput target of 600 mt set by the Shipping Ministry for the year ending March 31, 2011.

For the year ended March 2010, India’s ocean trade through major ports was estimated at 561 mt, up nearly 6% from 530.5 mt the previous year, while container traffic rose 4.3% to 6.87M TEU from 6.59M TEU a year earlier.
