Against all expectations, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has reported an increase in the volume of cargo passing through Mombasa last year, with total cargo handled up by 2.8% to 16.41 mt. Almost all of the increase can be attributed to the 10.2% increase in transit traffic to 4.87 mt, as trade with the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo grew particularly quickly.
