JNPT invites RFQs for another box berth

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) is investing in two new dry ports, and hopes to open both facilities by mid-2019. The two inland ports are located at Jalna, which is near the city of Aurangabad, and Wardhwa, which is close to the city of Nagpur. Both facilities will have the capacity to handle 20,000 TEU a year.

Healthy growth in container traffi c over the last six months and announcements from the government and private sector players have created a bullish outlook for India’s port sector.

The Indian government is to develop Rewas Port on its own, after Reliance Industries Ltd failed to move forward on the project.

With the introduction of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, APM Terminals-operated Gateway Terminals India (GTI) has shortened lead times and eased congestion in India’s busiest public harbour, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

India’s major ports have recorded growth of 6.79 % in cargo during the 2016-17 financial year, representing 647.43 Mt. During the same period last year, the 12 “major ports”, under the Indian shipping ministry definition, posted growth of 4.32%.

India’s cabinet committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi has approved the US$310M deepening and widening of JN Port Channel (Phase-II) and Mumbai Harbour Channel project.
