Melbourne has set a new Australian record for container handling, becoming the first port to handle 2M TEU in a 12-month period. The milestone was achieved just as an independent panel began public hearings into the supplementary environmental effects statement for the port’s much-needed channel deepening, during which shipowners warned that trade will be diverted and surcharges levied if the project does not proceed.
