Kazakhstan plans new China-Russia transit route
NewsKazakhstan is developing a new trade route from China to Russia via the Irtysh River, with a port and railway planned, aiming for completion by 2026.
TransContainer (TC), Russian Railways (RZD)’s intermodal daughter, is trialling fast transit, 150 TEU container trains on three different routes. The first, scheduled to take 25 days, is Malmö-Shanghai via ferry to Paldiski, landbridge rail to Vostochny and lo-lo feeder to the Chinese port. It is carrying bulk eastbound and the westbound consignment is finished wood. TC’s director general Petr Baskakov is eyeing furniture giant Ikea as a potential consignor.
