Dubai-based DP World (DPW)’s move to take over P&O, and with it P&O Ports’ global container terminal assets (see page 1), has caused concern among Indian shipping companies, exporters and importers, who fear the company will emerge as a monopoly port operator in the country.

DPW already operates Visakha Container Terminal along with its Indian joint venture partner and Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal at Kochi in the southern state of Kerala. It has also won the concession for the Vallarpadam container transhipment terminal near Kochi, which it will manage when it is ready in four years time.
