Nansha underused as ships stay away

China’s new container port at Nansha on the west bank of the Pearl River has made a modest start by attracting domestic carriers China Shipping Container Line (CSCL), which makes three weekly calls, and Cosco Container Lines, which operates two unscheduled monthly services.

Since opening in September last year, Nansha’s four multi-purpose berths, equipped with 12 ZPMC post-Panamax ship-toshore cranes and 36 RTGs, have handled less than 11,000 TEU a month, although as a pure container facility its capacity is more than 41,000 TEU/month.
