Kazakhstan plans new China-Russia transit route
NewsKazakhstan is developing a new trade route from China to Russia via the Irtysh River, with a port and railway planned, aiming for completion by 2026.
The first stage of the planned container terminal at the new Russian port of Ust-Luga on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Finland may be put in operation in 2006, a year earlier than planned, says Valery Izrailit, director general of the Ust-Luga Company (ULC).
As previously reported in WorldCargo News, ULC sold 75 percent of the future terminal to NCC (Severstaltrans and First Quantum) last year. Concurrently, NCC offered 26 percent of its 75 percent share to Eurogate, whose co-chairman CEO Thomas Eckelmann described Russia as “the most important future transit market for German container terminals.”
