Subic Freeport is fighting to retain its lucrative niche business of importing and selling used cars against mounting opposition from Philippine car assembly firms. Leading car and truck makers, backed by the local Japanese and American Chambers of Commerce, want the trade stopped on the grounds of unfair competition and the safety hazards posed by converted right-hand drive vehicles on Philippine roads.
