Konecranes sets net-zero targets in line with SBTi

Konecranes has announced that it will set net-zero group emission reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard. This complements its existing near-term goal of halving emissions from its operations and value chain by 2030.

In 2022, Konecranes made substantial progress in decarbonising its operations and wider value chain, with the SBTi approving its near-term climate targets. These include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year. Additionally, the company aims to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 50% by the same year. This target focuses on emissions from purchased goods and services, as well as the use of sold products, with 2019 also serving as the baseline year.

Steady progress

Konecranes reported steady progress towards these targets, having already achieved its Scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions in 2022, and reducing Scope 3 emissions by 19% by the end of 2023.

The company is now working towards its long-term goal of net-zero emissions, which will be developed and submitted to the SBTi for approval within the next 24 months, following the science-based targets standard.

Anniina Virta-Toikka, Vice President of Sustainability at Konecranes, commented: “So far, Konecranes has made excellent progress on its decarbonisation journey. Achieving the Scope 1 and 2 science-based targets eight years ahead of schedule shows that we are on the right path. We are ready to challenge ourselves further and, with our Scope 3 commitment, we are also challenging our customers and suppliers to do the same.”

In addition to these emissions goals, Konecranes has outlined four core sustainability commitments: “We enable a decarbonised and circular world; we deliver safe and secure material handling solutions; we create a fair, inclusive, diverse, and engaging working environment; and we expect the highest ethical standards from ourselves and our business partners.” The company has set ambitious targets for all four areas and regularly monitors and reports its progress towards meeting these commitments.
