The container ship MSC Antonia lost 46 containers due to severe weather off the coast of Port St. Johns in the Eastern Cape. The ship, sailing under the Liberian flag, was travelling from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to New York when it encountered rough seas. Additionally, 305 other containers were damaged.

The incident occurred last week, about 29 nautical miles northeast of Port St. Johns. Despite the loss and damage to the cargo, no injuries were reported, and the ship safely continued its journey.

The vessel is currently moored in Cape Town, where it will be inspected and the damaged cargo will be assessed and offloaded as needed.

The MSC Antonia, 304.15 metres long and 40.05 metres wide, has a draft of 14.3 metres. This 7,000 TEU ship was built in 2009.

This is the third recent incident off the South African coast. Last month, the CMA CGM Belem lost 99 containers near the Port of Richards Bay and had to seek shelter in Maputo Bay. In July, while sailing from Asia to Europe, the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin lost 44 containers, with 30 boxes reported damaged.
