Kalmar delivers container handlers to Penang Port
The investment will facilitate Penang Port’s initial step towards insourcing empty container handling and implementing container weighing operations.
Penang Port Sdn Bhd (Penang Port), a member of the MMC Corporation Berhad (MMC), has taken delivery of four empty container handlers and one reach stacker from Kalmar.
Penang Port is the operator of Port of Penang, typically ranked as Malaysia’s third busiest port in terms of container handling, after Port Klang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas.
“The empty container handlers will be deployed to handle empty containers, marking the first time Penang Port will fully insource this operation using its own manpower and equipment. This strategic move aims to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness,” the company said.
The company added that the acquisition of the Kalmar container handlers is expected to “streamline internal processes and significantly improve efficiency and enhance our port operations competitiveness.”
The reach stacker, equipped with a container weighing system, will be utilised for container weighing operations, also a first for Penang Port, which is expected to generate additional revenue and enhance efficiency.
