German crane manufacturer Ardelt Kranbau has secured an order for a double jib slewing crane with an integrated bunker, model Tukan K (K=Kangaroo), from port service provider Weserport GmbH, a joint venture between the Rhenus Group (51%) and Arcelor Mittal Bremen Gmbh (49%).

The electrically operated, rail-mounted crane is destined for Terminal 3 of the Weserport in Bremen and is scheduled to go into operation by December 2025.

Weserport operates four terminals in the Industriehäfen (Industrial Habours) port district of Bremen. Terminal 3 is currently used exclusively for handling bulk cargo for ArcelorMittal Bremen.

The Tukan Kangaroo crane features a hopper integrated into a high gantry system. This design allows the grab to travel directly from the ship’s hatch to the hopper in a single load pass without rotation. By eliminating rotation, the crane achieves shorter work cycles, resulting in faster and more efficient handling compared to traditional cranes.

The crane can unload directly into wagons or trucks that move under and through the gantry, facilitating easy transport of cargo to silos or land site stockpiles.

The crane has a maximum radius of 55m and has two grab stages with a maximum lifting capacity of 50 tonnes and 63 tonnes.

These parameters enable the crane to unload Panamax-size vessels with a designed free-digging handling capacity of approx. 2,300 t/h when unloading iron ore pellets.

Ardelt said that the tailor-made design of the crane enables an “optimum integration of the crane in the existing Weserport facilities, with maximum operating efficiency.”

The new order follows the restructuring of Kocks Ardelt Kranbau GmbH, which led to the formation of Ardelt Kranbau GmbH. After insolvency proceedings began in April 2022, Uwe Grünhagen, former General Manager of Kocks Ardelt Kranbau GmbH, acquired the company through a share deal in February 2023.

Based in Eberswalde near Berlin, Ardelt Kranbau GmbH has refocused on crane production and servicing.

Ardelt was able to re-enter the market as a manufacturer and supplier of new cranes following the positive approval of a state guarantee from the state of Brandenburg in June of this year, the company told WorldCargo News.

“With the state guarantee as security, Ardelt has found a financial partner that is prepared to provide the necessary and essential guarantee framework to accommodate new crane orders,” the company said.

“Weserport was closely involved in the application procedure for the necessary state guarantee, was continuously informed on the latest status and had full confidence in the continued existence of Ardelt Kranbau GmbH.”

The company said that one year after the restart under new ownership, the company’s “order books are well filled for all business areas.”

“This means Ardelt is once again a manufacturer of new cranes. In line with the new strategy adopted in 2023, the existing engineering and service divisions will thus be supplemented by another important business unit,” the company added.

“We are particularly pleased about the continued trust of our long-standing customers and look forward to a successful future for crane construction in Eberswalde,” Grünhagen, managing director, said commenting on the order.
