Chiquita is reorganising its European banana business. It has cancelled a contract with MSC that brought around 80,000 tpa of bananas in its containers into Bremerhaven, its traditional port for Germany, where bananas are ripened before distribution to Germany, Scandinavia and parts of Eastern Europe. Chiquita switched to MSC container vessels in 016, having previously called at Bremerhaven with its Great White Fleet reefer ships, carrying containers and breakbulk.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Carrier’s invention of the front wall container refrigeration unit, a version of which is used in virtually every reefer container.
