Hapag-Lloyd orders 150,000 TEU
NewsCarrier spends US$550M on one of its biggest container orders to date and continues its move to steel flooring.
Süd Chemie Performance Packaging, best known in the container industry for its Container Dri desiccant range, is due to launch a new ethylene absorption product early in 2004.
The US-based company is targeting the product, styled Pro-Fresh, at shippers of fresh flowers and other sensitive agricultural produce that is affected by ethylene gas released during transport and storage. Ethylene is produced naturally by many fresh fruits and vegetables, especially apples, avocadoes, bananas and kiwifruit, while it is also present in emissions from engines and other appliances, such as greenhouse heaters. Because the gas is highly reactive, it accelerates the ripening process for most types of produce and can cause premature deterioration. This may be visible through shrivelling, spotting, discoloration, sprouting, wilting or the release of odours. Numerous products are adversely and rapidly affected by high ethylene concentrations, including apples, bananas, broccoli, potatoes, citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables and cut flowers.
