There can be little doubt that the biggest “cargo” transported in containers today is fresh air. According to some estimates, over 20 percent of all boxes moved by ship are empty as owners shift idle stocks from surplus to demand areas. For leasing companies the problem is particularly acute and they often have to charter entire vessels just to reposition their empties. The annual cost to the industry of moving all this air runs into billions of dollars.
