Container demand has slumped dramatically this year. Preliminary estimates suggest that global container output will be down by around 40 per cent

For once container manufacturers cannot be blamed entirely for the parlous state of the market, as the spectacular drop in box production has come largely as a consequence of the changed trading climate of 2001. But although the recent shift in container demand has clearly been more severe than usual, and has undoubtedly been influenced by the abnormal economic and political events of 2001, it has still followed the same cyclical pattern during the past two years as in previous years.
