The Australian waterfront has had, in the words of federal Transport Minister John Anderson, a “red letter day,” with the national average crane rate officially breaking the 25 containers per hour benchmark set by the government and agreed by major stevedores as part of settlement of the infamous 1998 waterfront dispute.
