Finnish Railways’ VR Cargo and Russia’s Eurosib Transportation Systems have signed an agreement whereby VR will operate Eurosib rolling stock in Finland.

As briefly reported in last month’s issue of WorldCargo News (p32), a new intermodal service aimed at shortsea traffic carried in 45ft high cube, palletwide containers has been launched between the Finnish Port of Hamina, just 30 km from the border with Russia, and Saint Petersburg, by ContainerTrans Scandinavia, a joint venture of TransContainer (Russian Railways) and VR Cargo (Finnish Railways).

VR Cargo has a long history of transporting long, heavy and oversized cargo to Russia and other CIS countries.

The world’s first fully automated paper reel loading and discharging system for rail cars is set to go live at the Port of Rauma and UPM-Kymmene’s Kajaani mill in February. It is expected to be the precursor to greater automation in paper exporting ports and lead to less handling by conventional clamp trucks.

Rauma Stevedoring is developing an automated rail wagon unloading system, together with VR Cargo and Tecniks, a state-funded technology company.
