Euro Cargo Rail (ECR), now part of Railion Deutschland through EWS, has commenced container rail services between Zaragoza and Barcelona. Spanish rail freight services were deregulated in January 2005, but until now all open access operators (Continental Rail, Comsa Transport, Tracción Rail and Acciona Rail Services) have had majority Spanish equity.

ECR can offer services between Madrid, Barcelona and the French border (Port Bou) and between Madrid and Valencia. It is seeking permission to operate between Valencia and Barcelona.
