Too many boats on the streets

News-in-print

Venice is taking steps to reduce canal congestion and the damage to buildings caused by wave effects (moto ondoso). There are currently some 1600 canal boats in Venice delivering freight of which 1200 operate on an own account basis and the rest are third party service providers.

TransCare AG, the Germany-based consultancy, has developed an integrated city logistics plan aimed at reducing freight delivery boat trips/day from 3000 to 750. It is also working on a scheme for an express centre at Marco Polo airport and a bulk/neo-bulk distribution centre, probably at either Porto Marghera or San Giuliano. The plan for the city logistics centre is ready and a promising location for it has been identified at Tronchetto Norte, near Ponte de la Liberta.
