Australia’s sole remaining government-owned freight railway, Queensland Rail, has taken the first step towards becoming a national operator with the acquisition of the freight assets and business of Casino, New South Wales-based Northern Rivers Railroad (NRR).

QR made the purchase through a new wholly-owned subsidiary, QR National, and will run the rail company under the name Interail. QR chairman Bronwyn Morris said rail was now a national market and since other rail organisations could now compete for QR customers in Queensland, the company needed to be able to do the same in the southern states.
