Gopalpur, a seasonal port in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, is to be handed over to Orissa Stevedores Ltd for conversion into a major all-weather facility.

The Orissa state government invited expressions of interest for the privatisation of Gopalpur two years ago and five companies – BHP Billiton of Australia, Integrax of Malaysia and India’s Larsen & Toubro, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services and Orissa Stevedores – were shortlisted (see WorldCargo News June 2005, p12).
