Google mulls offshore datacentres

Rapid growth in the number of web users, combined with the increasing computing demands of moving from simple search and email uses to high resolution video streaming and complex Web 2.0 applications, is beginning to tax the existing Internet infrastructure and will require vastly increased datacentre capacity and more efficient use of communications networks.

So says Internet search giant Google Inc in a patent application filed with the US Patent Office in late August, which lays out a solution to the bandwidth problem via a variety of datacentre designs built with ships and containers, which rely on wave action to address power and cooling needs.
