Smart box unveiled

News-in-print

Three leaders in high-tech supply chain security and asset management systems – E J Brooks Company, RAE Systems and Savi Technology – have unveiled an inter-connected sensor system claimed to add new levels of intelligence to freight containers, enabling them to automatically detect intrusions, sense interior environmental changes in temperature or humidity, detect hazardous cargo such as radioactive materials and wirelessly communicate their location and security status to a global information

The door end of a standard 40ft ISO container, fitted with multiple sensors, Electronic Product Code (EPC)-compliant smart tags and active, data-rich radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies, was showcased at the recent US Maritime Security Expo in New York. The three firms have worked together to develop an integrated framework that can lead to the next-generation “smart container.” The system comprises a Brooks door sensor seal (E-Seal), a RAE Systems radioactivity sensor (RadRAE), and a Savi two-way network communication transponder (Sentinel). Data are transmitted over radio frequencies to the Savi SmartChain software platform and Savi Transportation Security System application for real-time monitoring and management. The demonstration unit also incorporated passive RFID tags from Matrics, which are designed to be compliant with the evolving Electronic Product Code, to demonstrate real-time item-level visibility of the container’s contents.
