Ammonia-powered tug Sakigake joins NYK Line’s fleet
NewsSakigake embarks on a new chapter with its transformation into the “world’s first ammonia-powered tugboat”.
NYK affiliate Yusen Terminals, Inc (YTI) has completed the first tenant-installed solar project at the Port of Los Angeles
The pilot system, installed in cooperation with NYK Trading Corporation and designed by SeaPort Energy, will produce 11,806 kWh/year using only 96 modules.
This represents emission reductions that are equal to planting 5.7 acres of trees each year. Real-time power generation monitoring is available on the YTI website environmental page (http://www.yti.com/).
The CIS (copper, indium and selenium) solar photovoltaic cells, produced by Solar Frontier Solar Frontier KK, are widely considered to be the “next generation PV modules” as they use no silicon, which is in short supply. CIS solar cells are also claimed to provide the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency of all thin-film modules due to their excellent absorption of available light.
YTI’s pilot project was installed adjacent to the wharf to demonstrate the durability of the CIS solar modules in a salt-water/maritime environment.
The POLA installation mirrors that recently completed at NYK’s terminal in Tokyo. In that case, the CIS solar cells were made by Solar Frontier Ltd, formerly known as Showa Shell Solar Co Ltd (WorldCargo News, April 2010, p4).
YTI’s project also supports POLA’s 5-year commitment to install 10 megawatts of solar power within the port complex. YTI was also the first POLA tenant to implement “cold ironing,” in November 2007.
