Copenhagen Malmö Port AB (CMP) and Watertruck AB are to start a daily barge service to connect container facilities on both sides of the öresund Strait. Operations will commence in March 2015 with four 100 TEU barges. Two or maybe three will carry containers while the other(s) will transport recyclable materials and bio fuels.
“A short cut will be created across the Öresund from which customers will benefit,” said Johan Röstin, CEO of CMP. “Transporting containers will be simpler and more cost-effective and the environmental impact will be reduced, as the barges offer an alternative to trucking. Emissions, noise and road congestion will be reduced.”
Today, large numbers of containers are trucked to and from the Skåne area of Southern Sweden, of which many could go via CMP, and then be feedered over Copenhagen instead of going by road to Hamburg. On average, a barge sailing will take two hours from one side to the other. Any facility can be served, according to customer demand.
In a separate development, US$1.4M of TEN-T funding has been awarded towards engineering studies for a new road and rail bridge at Malmö. The intention is to redesign the port’s road and rail connections, increase rail capacity, while improving public roads.
