Shipping line, shipbuilder and class society are taking steps to upgrade the hulls of the sister ships of the broken-backed 8500 TEU MOL COMFORT, the aft part of which sank on 27 June
Mitsui OSK Lines Ltd. (MOL), together with shipbuilder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) will take "[any] extra preventive measures as it may take some time to identify the cause."
For the six sister vessels, "we have already started the operational precautions to reduce the stress on the hull. These vessels sufficiently fill the safety standard required by ClassNK in compliance to IACS, but we will conduct upgrade works to further strengthen the hull structure at the earliest timing. This will enhance the strength of the hull twice as much as the safety standard mentioned above."
The sister vessels are MOL CREATION, MOL CHARISMA, MOL CELEBRATION, MOL COURAGE, MOL COMPETENCE and MOL COMMITMENT.
The aft part of MOL COMFORT sank on June 27 in the Indian Ocean (14’26”N by 66’26”E) with the loss of around 1700 containers, some of which were floating in the area. The aft part was estimated to be carrying around 1500t of fuel oil. As of June 28, MOL reported, the fore part was being towed stably with most of its cargo still aboard. Patrol boats contracted by MOL were monitoring the situation of oil leakage and floating containers in the area where the aft part sank. As it sank in water 4000m deep, no futher salvage is possible.
