Greener reefers from China after July 2021

AP Moller – Maersk (APMM) is to maintain its ownership of Maersk Container Industry (MCI).

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) has executed its plans to implement hot zinc spray application for corrosion protection of the reefer container frame in a modern, environmentally protected environment.

A record number of containers were manufactured in 2021 as trade growth continued and severe levels of congestion across supply chains meant ocean carriers needed more equipment in their pools to move the same volume of cargo. On average, containers took an estimated 20% longer to complete their trips last year than prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

A record number of maritime containers will be built in 2021 and several new factories are likely to be opened next year as the demand for equipment continues to increase.

The process of switching from the use of hot zinc spray and solvent paints to zinc primer and waterborne coatings for reefer containers manufactured at most factories in China has commenced. But it is not without its challenges and significant opposition from several customers still exists.

Maersk Container Industry (MCI) is not part of the CCIA plan (see main text), but it has invested heavily in its factory in Qingdao. Since late 2019, the plant’s emissions have been fully compliant with Chinese government regulations.
