The Port of New York/New Jersey’s vital deepening programme, agreed in 2000, is ongoing but will take a number of years to complete. Dredging costs are particularly expensive in the US partly due to very strict environmental constraints but also due to the Jones Act which forbids foreign vessels from working or trading in US waters.
