Dana Rexroth shows HVT R2 at CeMAT

News

The R2 hydromechanical variable transmission is available for prototype testing on equipment such as reach stackers, ECHs, large FLTs and ro-ro tractors

Designed and manufactured by Dana Rexroth Transmission Systems in Trento, Italy and thus a product of the Dana Holding Corporation and Bosch Rexroth joint venture, the HVT R2 features a modular design that can be adapted for a range of materials handling applications.

Travel drives in mobile plant are normally based on hydrostatic drive or torque converter drive. Both have inherent advnatages and, says Dan Rexroth, HVT R2 is aimed at combining the best of both worlds. The first range is fully hydrostatic and the second and third ranges are in power-split mode.

Sustained tests on a wheel loader have indicated fuel savings of around 25% with no productivity compromises.

Kalmar has been testing HVT R2 (which it terms "Power-Split" in a Gloria reach stacker in Lidhult. Fuel savings in excess of 35% and even up to 40% have reportedly been achieved. A second machine will be set up for testing soon. It looks as though Kalmar will offer HVT R2 as an option and other OEMs may be thinking on the same lines.

Also at CeMAT, Dana Holding Corporation unveiled what it calls a "four tier strategy" for powershift transmissions customised to meet regional requirements and preferences for materials handling plant. For example, Spicer T30 and TE30 transmssions for reach stackers and heavy FLTs will be available with a wide range of options and prototypes will be offered to OEMs for field-testing during 3Q/2014, with production of models with select features expected to begin at the end of this year. A similar approach will be adopted for Spicer T14 and TE14 for mid-sized FLTs (13t-27t). Production of short-drop prototypes is expected to begin by mid-2015.
