Cashing in one’s chips with grabs

In-Depth

Biomass handling could offer a new source of new equipment orders but debate is on-going as to which type of grab is best suited. There is considerable debate regarding the potential for biomass handling. Biomass is expected to displace some thermal coal burning, but will require considerably more handling capacity.

This is because biomass has a mass of only around 200-300 kg/m3 and typically has a 25% moisture content, compared to around 1000 kg/m3 for coal. Grabbing biomass is often thought to be the same as grabbing coal, but biomass is an umbrella term for a highly varied collection of fuels with different properties. While wood chips and bark are relatively easy to grab and have a low specific mass, grabbing pellets remains a challenge.
