MSC container ship linked to oil spill in South Africa
NewsAn investigation is underway into an oil spill in Algoa Bay, South Africa, with initial reports linking the spill to MSC Apollo, a 6,500 TEU container ship operated by MSC.
Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd has been awarded a contract by South African Port Operations (SAPO) for 14 superpost-Panamax cranes for Durban (8) and Cape Town (6). SAPO got its first taste of Liebherr cranes of this size in 2004 when it acquired three units for Durban’s South Quay from Contship Italia SpA. The Italian operator had been forced to sell on the unused cranes because lack of dredging meant that ships could not access the Ravano quay in La Spezia where they were stationed.
One of the new cranes just ordered will go to Durban South Quay, two will go on the East Quay and five will operate at the Pier One terminal. All 14 cranes will have an operational outreach of 52.00m and lift height under spreader is 37m. Operating speeds are 90 and 175 m/min for the hoist, 220/240 m/min for trolley and 45 m/min for long travel.
