Houston in expansion mode
NewsPort Houston is preparing for bigger ships and higher cargo volumes. Eventually, Pelican Island is a possible option to accommodate future growth.
The Port of Beirut has launched two tenders for container handling equipment, one of these covering supply of three quayside gantry cranes and six RTGs and yard support equipment. Bids are expected to be in place by mid-July, with the cranes being delivered within 15-18 months of the signing of the contract.
“The time is ripe because international prices have gone down and we expect to buy the equipment for around US$30 mill,” said port director Hassan Koraytem. As is well-known the port should already have had four cranes and eight RTGs from Liebherr, reach stackers from Hyster, etc but DPA/PDG pulled out of the project for reasons that have never been entirely made clear. Earlier this year the Beirut Chamber of Shipping called for the investment programme to be reactivated and it was rumoured that Saudi backing was on the cards (see WorldCargo News, April 2002, p1).
