Any old iron?

News-in-print

Paradip port in the east Indian state of Orissa, which last year commissioned a new coal handling facility at a cost of nearly Rs10 bill (US$208 mill), has found coal handling is not picking up as fast as it expected. The port is accordingly gearing up to handle other bulk cargoes, mainly iron ore.

Paradip’s mechanised coal handling facility has the capacity to handle nearly 20 mill tons of coal a year but its current throughput is only around 7 mill tons. This is adequate to break even in financial terms, but does not augur well for the port’s future. The main problem is that thermal coal imports are not rising because projected capacity additions to power plants have not materialised. There are also restrictions imposed by environment authorities on the import of high-ash coal for thermal plants.
